Forgiveness

by - TFOX

Something I think many overlook when setting up their bow is forgiveness.

3 things I feel affect forgiveness more than anything is arrow spine, fletching and the arrow rest.

I pay special attention to these areas.

If an arrow spine isn't correct, tuning and shootability is adversely affected. Weak arrows are impossible to tune and stiff spine arrows can be shot but will eat up some of the forgiveness. What most don't understand is that an arrow is like a TUNING FORK. (What does a tuning fork do? It vibrates) This is exactly what an arrow SHOULD do and it should be able to maintain that vibration to the target.Too weak and the arrow will wobble, not vibrate, too stiff, it will kick and remain stiff, in both cases, the arrow doesn't ABSORB the energy from the bow. IMO, this also decreases penetration. Also, without a properly spined arrow, broadhead tuning is impossible.

Fletching is the back bone of the arrow and is what helps an arrow fight off external forces such as torque and wind. One should try for as much helical as possible. This gives the arrow direction and stability. Also,IMO,feathers are the most forgiving because they provide much better stabilization and will lay down when contact is made. Don't let the rain myths scare you away from them.

Last but certainly not least. A rest should be soft, allowing the arrow to pass over it while having some give to it. It must remain in contact as long as possible (yes, longer is better) to give the arrow direction and stability. (This is why most indoor target shooters use a spring steel) AND, it must be able to allow clearance for your fletching, especially when utilizing heavy helical. This is a hard compromise to achieve but there are rests that will give all the above. The Limb Driver is a great rest for this but has alot of moving parts to it , long cord and arm hits the shelf). The Trophy Taker is a great rest but imo, falls a bit too early (and applies tension to the cables). The Spot Hogg Whammy has covered all the bases. The rest is up all the time, (except for when it is pulled out of the way) The rest is softer than a spring steel and only drops at the absolute last second, right before the fletching gets there. It also lets the arrow sit DEEP in the prongs making it very difficult to knock the arrow out of it. It also attaches to the up cable so there is no tension on the cables at full draw. It also stays up longer than the Limb Driver.

This rest also has micro adjustments so group tuning and broadhead tuning are a breeze.

IMO, the best rest available. It will not work on the Hoyt Vectrix due to the draw cycle, but that is the only bow I know of that it is not compatible with.
